He retired from ITU in 2009 and passed away in 2018. He became a professor at ITU in 1980 and served as the dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering from 1992 to 1996. He then obtained his master's and doctoral degrees from ITU in 19, respectively. Omurtag was born in 1942 in Istanbul and graduated from Istanbul Technical University (ITU) with a degree in civil engineering in 1965. He also developed several software tools for dynamic analysis and design, such as DYNASOL, DYNALAY and DYNACON. Some of his most popular books include Principles of Sound Design, Numerical Design of Furniture, Dynamic Analysis of Structures, and Dynamic Strength of Layered Dielectrics. Omurtag was also a prolific author who wrote more than 40 books and hundreds of articles on various topics related to dynamic design. He also led several projects on the design and construction of dams, bridges, tunnels and irrigation systems in Turkey and abroad. One of his most notable achievements was the establishment of the Turkish River Design Research Institute (TRDRI) in 1986, which aimed to study the applied dynamic strength of the sediment particles and the flow characteristics of rivers. He was best known for his work in naval design and river engineering, as well as his books on structural mechanics and dynamics. Mehmet Omurtag was a Turkish engineer, professor and researcher who made significant contributions to the field of dynamic design. Mehmet Omurtag: A Visionary in Dynamic Design
